Dress Kickstarter Microbrands Reviews Vario

Vario Silver Empire

08/28/201901/10/2021

The short short version: I really like the Vario Empire and it has earned a place in my watch box. The watch is simple and functional with a dress/casual design that is appropriate for many occasions while being unassuming. The Art Deco design shines through with the numerals and case design. An absolute winner in my estimation.

Vario is young, and only been around since 2016. After a successful Kickstarter in early 2019, the hand wound versions shipped over the summer and the automatics are due to arrive in Fall 2019.

This watch was sent to me for review, but arrived non-running due to prior mishandling by reviewers or a shipping incident. After informing the owner Ivan, who is a truly excellent fellow, about the situation he said I could do whatever I want with the watch. So, I replaced the movement (see here) and now for the review!

The details:

  • Model: Vario Silver Empire
  • Diameter: 38mm
  • Height: 11.2mm
  • Lug-to-lug: 46mm
  • Weight: ~54g (on strap)
  • Case: Stainless steel
  • Movement: Miyota 6T33 hand wound
  • Power Reserve: ~30 hours
  • Lume: N/A
  • Accuracy: +-30 seconds/day (unregulated)
  • Crystal: Sapphire, Flat
  • Water Resistance: 50m/150ft
  • Strap: 20mm
  • Retail Price: $348

The review:

Pros:

  • Simple design and functionality
  • Crisp details for a microbrand
  • Super comfortable to wear given the dimensions
  • The blued hands
  • The straps, especially the Italian leather strap

Cons:

  • Short power reserve
  • Sporadic accuracy
  • Retail price is a hair too high in my opinion given the movement, but the Kickstarter deals would have been more attractive.

I will say that even though there are clear differences, the Silver Empire reminds me a little bit of the Patek Philippe Calatrava.

Final Thought

I say you don’t have to think about how much you like a watch. You will know how much you like it by how much it works itself into your rotation (i.e., how often you choose to wear it). The Vario Empire has worked its way into my box and is finding regular wear on my wrist. I honestly love the simplicity and design. I look forward to seeing future releases from Vario.
